The zebra loach (Botia striata) is a small, peaceful, and active freshwater bottom-dweller known for its vertical black and yellowish stripes, snail-eating habits, and suitability for community aquariums.

  • Lifespan: Up to 10 years with proper care.
  • Origin: Native to the Krishna River basin and Tunga River in southern India.
  • Markings: Striking dark vertical bands over a yellowish or gold body with whisker-like barbels near the mouth.

Tank Requirements and Care

  • Group Size: Must be kept in social groups of 5 or more to reduce stress and squabbling.
  • Tank Size: Minimum 80 liters (approx. 20 gallons).
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 23–28°C (73–82°F) and a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5.
  • Environment: Soft sandy or fine gravel substrate to protect their sensitive barbels, paired with plenty of rocks, caves, and driftwood for hiding.

Diet and Behavior

  • Diet: Omnivorous; they readily accept sinking pellets, flakes, frozen foods, and live foods.
  • Snail Control: Famous for hunting and consuming small aquatic snails to manage pest populations.
