White Cloud Mountain Minnows
Product Details

The White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) is an extremely hardy, peaceful schooling fish originating from southern China. Growing to just 1.5 inches, these vibrant fish are ideal for beginner aquarists, nano tanks, and unheated or coldwater aquariums. They are easily fed and bred, making them a favorite for aquarists of all levels.

Quick Profile

  • Care Level: Very Easy
  • Temperament: Peaceful and active
  • Size: Up to 1.5 inches (~4 cm)
  • Life Span: 3 to 5 years
  • Diet: Omnivore

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: 10 to 15 gallons (at least 45–60 liters)
  • School Size: Minimum of 6–8 fish (8 to 12 is ideal to reduce stress)
  • Water Temperature: 60–72°F (14–22°C). They are coldwater-tolerant and often do not require a heater.
  • pH Level: 6.0 to 8.0
  • Tankmates: Best kept with other small, non-aggressive fish that prefer cooler waters, such as hillstream loaches, Danios, or peaceful barbs. Avoid large, aggressive tankmates.

Variations

The standard variety—often called the "poor man's neon"—features a dark bronze body with a luminous white/blue stripe and red fins. However, several selectively bred color morphs are popular in the hobby:

  • Golden: A striking yellow-gold body.
  • Long-finned: Elongated fins that create an elegant, fluttering look when swimming.
  • Albino: Pale/white bodies with red eyes.

Feeding

As omnivores, White Cloud Mountain Minnows are not fussy eaters. They thrive on a staple of high-quality, fine flakes or micro pellets. Supplementing their diet with small live or frozen foods (like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms) enhances their vibrant colors and encourages spawning behavior.
