The Telescope Goldfish, also known as the demekin or dragon-eye goldfish, is a popular fancy variety recognized by its egg-shaped body, long flowing fins, and distinct protruding eyes.
Eyes and Vision:
Their large, bulging eyes extend outward from the skull, giving them an iconic look but resulting in very poor vision.
Size and Lifespan:
They typically grow to about 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm) in body length and can live between 10 to 25 years with proper care.
Popular Varieties:
Tank Size:
Requires a minimum tank size of 40 US gallons (150 litres) for adequate swimming space and stable water chemistry.
Tank Setup:
Because their protruding eyes are fragile and prone to injury or bacterial infection, the aquarium must feature smooth, rounded decorations and soft substrate without any sharp or pointed edges.
Water Parameters:
Maintain a temperature between 50–72°F (10–22°C) and a pH level ranging from 6.0 to 8.0.
Tank Mates:
Best kept with other peaceful, slow-moving fancy goldfish. Avoid fast or aggressive species (like common goldfish or koi) that can outcompete them for food or nip at their delicate eyes.
