Overview
The T-Bar Cichlid (Amatitlania sajica), previously known as Cryptoheros sajica, is a vibrant and relatively peaceful freshwater fish native to the river streams and lakes of Costa Rica. This species is named after the distinctive dark T-shaped bar pattern on its side. It serves as an excellent introduction to Central American cichlids due to its manageable size and hardy nature.

Quick Care Overview

  • Tank Size:
Minimum 150–200 litres (approx. 30–40+ gallons) for a single compatible pair.

  • Water Temperature:
    22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).

  • pH Range:
6.5 to 7.5 (up to 8.0 is well tolerated).

  • Max Size:

    • Males: 12–15 cm (5 inches).
    • Females: 9–10 cm (3.5 inches).

Key Characteristics & Behavior

  • Temperament:
Generally semi-aggressive but docile compared to most other Central American cichlids. They thrive in medium-to-large community aquariums but exhibit increased aggression during spawning and territory guarding.

  • Sexual Dimorphism:

    • Males grow larger, develop a subtle forehead hump, and feature red or blue trim on their fins.
    • Females stay smaller and display distinct yellow coloration on their dorsal and anal fins.
  • Tank Setup:
They prefer a sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of hiding spaces such as rocky caves, driftwood, and inverted flower pots. As avid diggers, hardy plants like Java Fern or Anubias should be anchored to hardscape rather than rooted in the substrate.

  • Diet:
Opportunistic omnivores, they readily consume high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and regular supplements of frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms.

With its striking appearance and manageable care requirements, the T-Bar Cichlid is a fantastic addition to freshwater aquariums!
