Swordtail - RREA Super Red High Fin
Product Details

The swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a hardy, peaceful tropical freshwater fish native to Central America. Famous for the elongated, sword-like lower tail fin on males, these active livebearers come in a variety of vibrant colors and are highly recommended for community aquariums.

Quick Facts

  • Care Level: Beginner-friendly
  • Temperament: Peaceful but active
  • Size: Up to 12-14 cm (5 inches)
  • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years

Habitat and Care

Swordtails thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of open swimming space. As they are prolific jumpers, a secure lid is essential.

  • Temperature: 22°C to 27°C (72°F to 80°F)
  • Water Parameters: pH 7.0 to 8.0, moderate to hard water
  • Diet: Omnivorous. They accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.

Behavior and Breeding

Swordtails are livebearers, meaning females give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.

The "Sword":

The signature extension on the male’s tail is a sexually selected trait designed to attract females. Interestingly, females prefer males with longer swords, even though it makes them slightly slower and more vulnerable to predators in the wild.

Tank Mates:

  • Keep only one male per aquarium in smaller tanks to prevent aggressive territorial behavior.
  • Mix excellently with other peaceful community fish like tetras, platies, and mollies.

Compatibility

Swordtails are generally a joy to keep, but their breeding habits and sometimes boisterous activity require careful tank planning.
