Care Overview

This peaceful bottom-dweller is prized for being a hardy, industrious algae eater.

Tank Size

At least 75 litres (20 gallons) for a single adult.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: Prefers 22°C to 27°C
• pH: 6.5 to 7.5
• Water Hardness: Soft to moderate

Diet

• Grazes heavily on soft algae.
• Must be supplemented with high-quality Algae Wafers and blanched vegetables like zucchini.

Tank Setup

• Requires plenty of hiding places and rockwork.
• Driftwood is essential for rasping, which aids in their digestion.

Identification & Temperament

Juveniles can be easily confused with the Starlight Pleco (L183). However, as L181 matures:

• Its striking white fin fringes and distinct white spots become bolder.
• True identification is verified by counting soft dorsal fin rays (L181 typically has 7 to 8).

They are mostly nocturnal and can sometimes display mild territoriality towards other bottom-dwellers. However, they generally fit well in community tanks.
