Key Species Overview
- Size: Up to 6 inches (15 cm).
- Lifespan: 8–10 years.
- Temperament: Peaceful. Best kept in schools of 4–6 or in larger community setups with other non-aggressive fish.
- Water Conditions: Temperature of 75°F–81°F (24°C–27°C) and pH 6.0–7.5.
Ideal Tank Setup
- Minimum Size: 40 gallons (150 liters) or larger. These fish are energetic swimmers and require plenty of horizontal space.
- Decorations: Heavy planting, driftwood, and rocks. They thrive in well-oxygenated water with a moderate current and require a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping.
Diet & Maintenance
While young specimens graze heavily on tank algae, they are opportunistic omnivores. Their diet should include:
- Natural Algae: Soft green algae, brown diatoms, and hair algae.
- Supplemental Food: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, spirulina, and occasional blanched vegetables or frozen foods.
Note: Do not overfeed, or they may become lazy and ignore the algae in your tank.
