Product details
The Hemigrammus rhodostomus, commonly known as the true rummy-nose tetra, is a popular tropical freshwater fish native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. It is famous for its glowing ruby-red nose and black-and-white striped tail.
Appearance and Behavior
Size: Grows to about 2 inches (5 cm) long.
Body: Translucent, silvery-torpedo shape.
Markings: Bright red-orange head and a horizontally striped black-and-white tail fin.
Schooling: Extremely active and social, known for swimming in tight, synchronized groups.
Health Indicator: Their red nose acts like a mood ring; fading color often signals stress or poor water quality.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Size: At least 20 gallons (70–80 liters) to accommodate an active school.
Water Parameters: Prefers soft, acidic water with a temperature of 73–82°F (23–28°C) and a pH of 5.5 to 7.0.
Environment: Thrives in planted aquariums with dark substrates, driftwood, and subdued lighting that mimics a natural blackwater biotope.
Diet and Compatibility
Diet: Omnivorous; accepts high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
Tank Mates: Peaceful community fish; best kept with other gentle South American species like Corydoras catfish, small rasboras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid large, aggressive, or fast-moving fish.
