Reed Tetra

Hyphessobrycon elachys, commonly known as the reed tetra or veilfin tetra, is a tiny, peaceful freshwater fish native to South America. It belongs to the family Characidae and is highly valued in the aquarium hobby, particularly for nano and planted tanks.

Appearance and Size

• Adult size: Grows to only about 1.5 to 2.5 cm (0.6 to 1.0 inch) in length, making it one of the smallest tetra species.
• Body: Slender, laterally compressed, and translucent silver with an understated iridescent sheen.
• Markings: Features a conspicuous black spot on the caudal peduncle (tail base) bordered by white.
• Sexual dimorphism: Mature males develop elongated dorsal and pelvic fins and a broad anal fin lobe, while females are slightly fuller-bodied with shorter fins.

Natural Habitat and Distribution

• Geographic origin: Endemic to the Rio Paraguay and Rio Paraná river basins in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
• Environment: Inhabits shallow, slow-moving or stagnant channels, swamps, and small tributaries rich in submerged vegetation and leaf litter.

Aquarium Care and Requirements

• Water parameters: Prefers a temperature of 24–27°C (75–81°F), a pH range of 6.0–7.2, and soft, slightly acidic water.
• Tank setup: Thrives in well-planted aquariums with roots, driftwood, and subdued lighting to mimic its natural biotope.
• Social behavior: Highly social and timid; must be kept in a group (shoal) of 8 or more individuals to feel secure and display natural active behavior.
• Diet: Omnivorous and accepts micro pellets, crushed flakes, and tiny live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp and daphnia.
