Rainbow Badis

Origin and Appearance

The Scarlet Badis (Dario dario) is a tiny, vividly colored tropical freshwater fish native to India. It is renowned as one of the smallest known percoid species.

  • A strict diet of live or frozen micro-foods.
  • Territorial behavior in small spaces.

Native Habitat

• Found in slow-moving, clear, heavily vegetated streams and side channels in India.

Size

• Adults reach only 0.75 to 1 inch (2–2.5 cm) in length.

Sexual Dimorphism

• Males: Display brilliant scarlet-red vertical bars with hints of blue/teal.
• Females: Much drabber, appearing silvery-gray or plain white.

Tank Setup and Care

Tank Size

• Minimum: 5 gallons for a single specimen.
• Recommended: 10 gallons or larger for groups.

Decor

• Requires dense live plants, driftwood, and leaf litter to provide security and break up lines of sight.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C).
• pH: 6.0–7.5.
• Prefers stable, clean water conditions.
