Pygmy Cory
Product Details

Corydoras pygmaeus (commonly known as the Pygmy Cory) is a tiny, peaceful, and highly active South American schooling catfish.

Overview

  • Size: Growing to only 2-2.5 cm (1 inch) in length, they are ideal for nano tanks.
  • Unique Behavior: Unlike other corys, they exhibit mid-water "hummingbird" hovering behavior.
  • Requirements: They thrive in soft water, a well-planted environment, and need to be kept in a school of 6 or more.

Key Species Facts

  • Common Name: Pygmy Cory, Dwarf Catfish
  • Size: Maximum of 2 to 2.5 cm (1 inch); females are slightly larger and rounder than males.
  • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years with proper care.
  • Origin: Native to the Madeira River basin and surrounding tributaries in Brazil.
  • Temperament: Highly peaceful, social, and schooling.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 38 liters (10 gallons) is recommended to accommodate a school comfortably.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F)
    • pH: 6.0 to 8.0
    • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (5 to 20° dH)
  • Substrate & Decor:
    • Sand or fine, smooth gravel is essential to prevent damage to their sensitive barbels (whiskers).
    • Include plenty of live plants and hiding spots to help them feel secure.

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Activity: Unlike most bottom-dwelling catfish, Pygmy Corys spend a significant amount of time hovering and schooling in the middle of the water column.
  • Tank Mates:
    • Excellent for nano community tanks.
    • Best kept with other tiny, peaceful fish (e.g., chili rasboras, neon tetras) and small invertebrates like cherry shrimp.

Diet

  • Feeding Habits: Due to their very small mouths, they require tiny, sinking foods. They do not forage from the water's surface.
  • Dietary Options:
    • Sinking micro-pellets
    • Crushed flakes
    • Live or frozen baby brine shrimp
    • Daphnia
    • Tiny worms

This delightful species is perfect for aquarists looking for a peaceful and unique addition to their nano tanks. With the right care and environment, Pygmy Corys will thrive and bring life to your aquarium!
