Polypterus Senegalus - Albino
Product Details

Polypterus senegalus, commonly known as the Senegal bichir or dinosaur bichir, is an ancient, primitive freshwater fish native to Africa. Highly recognizable by its elongated, snake-like body, armor-like ganoid scales, and series of dorsal finlets, it is a popular, hardy, and long-lived addition to large freshwater aquariums.

Key Characteristics & Anatomy

Physical Appearance:

  • Thick, diamond-shaped scales.
  • A modified swim bladder that functions as a lung, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air and survive out of water for short periods as long as they stay moist.

Size:

  • In captivity, they typically grow to about 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches).

Lifespan:

  • Extremely long-lived, often thriving in captivity for 15 to 20+ years, with some specimens living into their 30s.

Behavior & Temperament

Nocturnal Predators:

  • Opportunistic, bottom-dwelling carnivores that use an acute sense of smell and suction to hunt small fish, insects, and crustaceans.

Tank Mates:

  • Generally peaceful with similarly sized or larger tank mates. However, they will attempt to eat any animal that fits into their mouth.

Captive Care Requirements

Tank Size:

  • An adult requires a spacious aquarium of at least 350 liters (approx. 90+ gallons) with plenty of floor space.

Diet:

  • Their diet should consist of meaty, high-protein foods like sinking carnivore pellets, earthworms, mysis shrimp, and frozen fish/krill.

Enclosure:

  • A tightly sealed lid is mandatory, as these fish are notorious escape artists and jumpers.
