Product Details

The Thayeria boehlkei is a popular freshwater aquarium fish, commonly known as the penguin tetra or hockey-stick tetra. It is easily recognized by its unique head-up tilted swimming posture and a prominent black stripe running across its silver body down to its tail.


Habitat and Origin

Native Range:
Upper Amazon basin in Peru and the Araguaia River in Brazil, South America.

Natural Environment:
This species thrives in slow-moving streams, jungle tributaries, and flooded areas with dense vegetation or overhanging trees.


Aquarium Care and Requirements

Tank Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons (75 liters) is required to support a proper school.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (71.6–82.4°F)
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

Social Behavior:
Penguin tetras are peaceful schooling fish. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals (ideally 10+) to reduce stress and prevent nipping.

Lifespan:
With proper care, these fish can live for 3 to 5 years.


Diet

Feeding Habits:
Omnivorous micro-predators.

Foods Accepted:
They readily eat high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.
