Parrot Fish

The red parrot fish, commonly referred to as the blood parrot cichlid, is a man-made hybrid freshwater aquarium fish celebrated for its vibrant red-orange color, rounded body, and distinctive beak-like mouth. (Note: This species is different from marine ocean parrotfish that inhabit coral reefs.)

Physical and Behavioral Traits

• Appearance: Bright red, orange, or yellow coloration with a round, balloon-shaped body and large, expressive eyes.
• Mouth Shape: A unique, vertical slit-like mouth that cannot close fully, which can make eating regular food a challenge.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful to semi-aggressive, though they can be territorial during breeding or when defending caves.
• Size and Lifespan: Grow up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) long and live for about 8–10 years.

Tank Care Requirements

• Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for proper swimming space and waste management.
• Water Parameters: Maintain water temperatures between 76°F–80°F (24°–27°C) and a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.4.
• Tank Setup: Use soft sand or fine gravel since they love to dig, and provide rocks, driftwood, or clay pots for hiding places.
• Diet: Feed small floating pellets or specialized sinking foods that fit easily into their unique mouth opening.
