The red rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisa), also known as the salmon-red rainbowfish, is a vibrant freshwater fish native to Lake Sentani in Papua, Indonesia. Known for its bright red coloration, this species is highly sought after in the aquarium hobby. Unfortunately, it is endangered in the wild.
Physical Traits and Lifespan
- Size: Reaches a length of 12–15 cm (4.5–6 inches).
- Appearance:
- Males: Exhibit a stunning neon or salmon-red hue and develop a high-backed body as they mature.
- Females and juveniles: Slimmer with a plain olive-brown or silvery appearance.
- Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5 to 8 years.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: A minimum of 40 to 55 gallons (approximately 150–200 liters) to provide adequate swimming space for a school.
- Water Chemistry:
- Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Moderately hard water.
- Environment: A well-planted tank with open areas for swimming is ideal. Ensure a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping.
- Behavior: Peaceful and active, they thrive best in a group (school) of 6 or more.
