Mini coconut pods (botanicals) benefit fish health primarily byreleasing beneficial tannins and humic substancesand providingnatural hiding placesand a surface for the growth ofbiofilm and microfauna, which serve as supplemental food sources.
Health Benefits for Fish
Release Beneficial Tannins:The pods release tannins and humic acids into the water, which have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties that help prevent diseases. This also naturally and slightly lowers the pH of the water, which can replicate the natural "blackwater" biotope conditions that many tropical fish species thrive in, reducing stress.
Reduce Stress and Aggression:The unique shapes and structure of the pods provide natural cover and a sense of security, offering excellent hiding spots and resting places for shy or nocturnal fish, shrimp, and fry. This natural shelter helps to reduce overall stress and aggression levels in the aquarium, promoting better well-being and natural behaviors.
Provide Natural Food Source:The pods offer a large surface area for the growth of beneficial biofilm, bacteria, and microfauna, which are a vital, continuous, and highly nutritious supplemental food source for shrimp, small fish, and fish fry.
Enhance the Ecosystem:By providing both a food source and shelter, mini coconut pods contribute to overall biodiversity and create a more natural, balanced, and stimulating environment that mimics a fish's wild habitat.
Preparation
It is recommended to boil the pods for at least 30-60 minutes (or longer) before adding them to the aquarium to help them sink and to release some of the initial organic compounds and excess tannins. Soaking them in fresh water for several days afterward is also a good practice to ensure they are fully waterlogged and safe for your tank.
