Product details

Peckoltia brevis, widely known in the aquarium hobby as the Purus Tiger Pleco or by its L-number LDA078 (and often confused with L205), is a small, armored suckermouth catfish native to the Amazon basin.

🧬 Taxonomy & Origin

  • Scientific Name: Peckoltia brevis (originally described as Hemiancistrus brevis)
  • Family: Loricariidae
  • Native Range: South America, specifically the Amazon basin across Brazil, Peru, and Colombia (frequently collected from the Rio Purus and Rio Juruá).

📐 Physical Characteristics

  • Size: It is a dwarf pleco species, reaching a maximum adult length of 10 to 12 cm (4 to 4.5 inches).
  • Appearance: Features a golden-brown or tan body adorned with bold, dark transverse bands/saddles and a spotted head. Juveniles start quite yellow and darken into richer orange or pinkish-brown tones as they mature.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males develop noticeable, bristly "odontodes" on their pectoral fin rays and the rear half of their bodies, whereas mature females have a noticeably wider body girth.

🐠 Behavior & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful toward mid-water fish, small shrimp, and non-aggressive tankmates.
  • Territoriality: They are bottom-dwellers and can be territorial toward their own kind or other similar L-number plecos. Providing distinct hiding spaces resolves this.
  • Activity: Primarily nocturnal or crepuscular. They will spend the majority of the daytime hiding in dark spaces.

🧪 Aquarium Care & Water Parameters

  • Tank Size: Minimum 100 liters (approx. 25–30 gallons) for a single specimen or a small group, provided there is enough floor space.
  • Temperature: Keep the water between 22°C and 26°C (71.6°F to 78.8°F).
  • pH & Hardness: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.8 to 7.2) and general hardness up to 15 °dGH.
  • Decor Requirements: A properly structured tank is essential. They require rock caves, ceramic tubes, or tangled driftwood to establish their territories. Driftwood is also highly recommended because they like to rasp on the wood fibers to aid digestion.

🍽️ Diet & Feeding

Unlike standard Ancistrus (Bristlenose) plecos, Peckoltia brevis is a true omnivore with a strong leaning toward meaty foods. They are not efficient algae cleaners.

  • Meaty Foods: Frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp.
  • Vegetal & Prepared Foods: High-quality sinking catfish tablets, spirulina wafers, and occasional fresh blanched veggies (zucchini or peas).
  • Feeding Time: Best fed right after the aquarium lights are turned off for the evening.
