The L141 Pleco: Ghost Pleco or White Tail Ghost Pleco

The L141 Pleco, scientifically known as Ancistomus snethlageae, is a freshwater catfish native to Brazil's Amazon River basin. It is valued for its pale, translucent body, algae-grazing habits, and peaceful community temperament.

Origin and Appearance

Origin:

  • Found in the clear, warm, fast-flowing waters and rocky stretches of the Rio Tapajós and Rio Jamanxim in Brazil.
  • Also cataloged under the alternate designation L215.

Appearance:

  • Features a pale grey, cream, or translucent body, earning it the "ghost" name, with subtle mottling.
  • Juveniles often display a striking white seam on their tail (caudal fin), which fades as the fish matures into a darker charcoal or brown tone.

Size:

  • Reaches an average adult length of 5 to 8 inches (13 to 20 cm).

Tank Requirements and Care

Tank Size:

  • Requires a minimum of 30 gallons (or larger) to provide adequate territory and swimming space.

Water Parameters:

  • Prefers warm, highly oxygenated water with a strong current.
  • Maintain a temperature of 76°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C) and a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5.

Environment:

  • Needs plenty of driftwood, caves, and rock crevices to mimic its natural riverbed habitat and offer secure hiding spaces.

Diet and Temperament

Diet:

  • An omnivore with a strong appetite for algae, biofilm, and wood-grazing.
  • Supplement its diet with:
    • Sinking algae wafers
    • Vegetables like zucchini or cucumber
    • Occasional protein sources such as bloodworms.

Compatibility:

  • Generally peaceful with mid-dwelling community fish like tetras and rasboras.
  • Note: Mature males may become territorial toward other bottom-dwellers and similar plecos.
