Hypostomus soniae, widely known in the aquarium hobby as the blue-eyed redfin pleco or by its L-number L-137, is a freshwater catfish species native to the Tapajós River basin in Brazil. It typically grows to a length of about 6.5 to 10 inches and is prized for its striking blue eyes and colorful red or orange-tinted fins.

Natural Habitat and Care

• Origin: Rio Tapajós, Pará state, Brazil (clear water systems).
• Tank Size: Minimum 4-foot tank (around 90 gallons recommended for adults) to accommodate its high metabolic rate.
• Water Parameters: Temperature 76–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.5–7.5, with strong current and high oxygenation.
• Diet: Omnivorous with a heavy reliance on wood-eating; requires driftwood in the tank alongside algae wafers, sinking pellets, and occasional meaty foods.

Behavior and Compatibility

• Temperament: Generally calm and peaceful, but can show territorial aggression toward other bottom-dwellers or similar pleco species.
• Lifespan: 8 to 12 years under proper aquarium care.
