The kuhli loach (Pangio kuhlii) is a small, eel-like freshwater fish from Southeast Asia, recognized by its salmon-pink or yellow body with dark vertical stripes, peaceful temperament, and nocturnal bottom-dwelling habits.
Appearance and Size
Body Shape: Slender, serpentine, and worm-like with tiny fins and translucent features.
Colors: Pinkish-orange background with 10 to 15 dark brown or black vertical bands half or fully circling the body.
Facial Features: Downward-facing mouths adorned with four pairs of sensitive barbels and tiny hidden eyes.
Length: Reaches 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) as an adult.
Lifespan: Can live 10 years or longer with proper care.
Tank Requirements
Group Size: Must be kept in social groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals to reduce stress and encourage daytime activity.
Tank Volume: Minimum of 20 to 30 gallons.
Substrate: Fine, smooth sand is required; rough gravel will damage and scrape their sensitive barbels.
Water Parameters: Temperature of 72–86°F (22–30°C), a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5–7.2, and low water current.
Aquarium Setup: Dense live plants, driftwood, and secure tight-fitting lids because they are notorious escape artists.
