Hoplo Catfish
Product Details

The Hoplo Catfish (Megalechis thoracata) is a highly adaptable, peaceful, and hardy South American freshwater fish known for its armored plating. Growing up to 15 cm (6 inches), they are excellent bottom-dwelling scavengers that breathe air, making them extremely resilient in various aquatic environments.

Key Species Facts

  • Size & Lifespan:
Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length. They can live for 5 to over 10 years with proper care.

  • Temperament:
Highly peaceful in community tanks, though they will opportunistically eat any tankmate small enough to fit in their mouths.

  • Physical Traits:
Feature two rows of bony plates (armor) and sensitive barbels used to sift through the substrate. Adult males develop striking, thick orange pectoral fins.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size:
A minimum of 200 liters (55 gallons) is recommended, as these active foragers do best when kept in small shoals.

  • Substrate:
Soft sand or smooth, fine gravel is essential. Because they dig for food, coarse or abrasive substrates can easily damage or erode their barbels.

  • Water Parameters:
They thrive in temperatures between 18 to 28°C (65 to 82°F) and a broad pH range of 6.0 to 8.0.

Unique Behaviors

  • Intestinal Air-Breathing:
Hoplo Catfish have a specialized intestinal tract that allows them to gulp air from the water's surface to survive in low-oxygen environments. It is important to leave a gap between the water's surface and the tank lid so they can breathe.

  • Bubble-Nest Builders:
Unlike many other catfish, Hoplos breed using floating bubble nests. The males build these nests out of bubbles and plant debris, guarding them fiercely during spawning.

Diet and Feeding

  • Omnivorous Scavengers:
They are bottom feeders that eagerly consume a wide variety of foods. A healthy diet should include high-quality sinking catfish pellets, algae wafers, and occasional live or frozen protein like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
