It is a popular, beginner-friendly choice for midground or background aquascaping that doubles as a natural water-quality indicator.

Physical Characteristics & Growth

Appearance:
Narrow, pointed light-green leaves radiate in star-like whorls along upright stems. The undersides of the leaves can take on a purple or darker hue.

Height & Spread:
Grows 30–50 cm tall and spreads densely via side shoots.

Water Quality Indicator:

• Transparent leaves signal a lack of nitrogen (NO₃).
• A dull, dark green hue indicates a phosphorus (PO₄) deficiency.

Care and Requirements

Difficulty:
Easy and undemanding, making it suitable for both low-tech and high-tech setups.

Lighting:
Medium to high intensity. Strong lighting ensures compact and vibrant growth.

Temperature & pH:
Thrives in temperatures between 20–28°C (68–82°F) and a pH range of 6.0–8.0.

Water Hardness:
Prefers soft to moderately hard water (4–18 dGH). It may struggle in very hard water above 18 dGH.

CO2 & Fertilization:
CO2 injection is optional but promotes faster and lusher growth.

Propagation and Maintenance

Propagation:
Easily propagated by trimming healthy stem cuttings and planting them directly into the substrate.

Pruning:
Requires regular trimming every 2–3 weeks to prevent the canopy from blocking light from reaching the lower leaves and stems.
