Product details
Hemigraphis colorata (commonly called Green Scarlet Leaf or Purple Waffle Plant) is a tropical, low-growing perennial groundcover from Southeast Asia known for its metallic green-and-purple ruffled leaves. While frequently sold incorrectly as a fully submerged aquarium plant, it is actually a marginal or terrarium plant that needs its leaves above water.
Plant Profile
- Scientific Name: Hemigraphis colorata (syn. Strobilanthes alternata)
- Family: Acanthaceae
- Native Range: Southeast Asia (Java, Indonesia, Malaysia)
- Max Height: 12 to 25 cm (5 to 10 inches)
- Appearance: Crinkled or puckered oval leaves with a metallic green/silver top and a solid deep purple underside.
Care and Cultivation
- Water: High moisture; requires consistently damp soil or placement as a marginal plant with roots in water.
- Light: Low to bright indirect light; stronger light intensifies the vibrant purple leaf coloration.
- Temperature: 18°C to 29°C (64°F to 84°F).
- Environment:
- Ideal for terrariums, paludariums, ripariums, or as a shaded indoor houseplant/ground cover.
- Will rot and decline if kept completely submerged underwater for more than a few months.
