Gymnogeophagus Balzanii (Paraguay Eartheater)

Gymnogeophagus balzanii (Paraguay Eartheater) require a 55–75 gallon tank with fine sand substrate, as well as a setup featuring rocks and driftwood to support their natural sifting behavior. They thrive in cooler subtropical water (70–77°F), with an optional 3–4 month "wintering" period (60–64°F) to enhance longevity. These fish are omnivorous, peaceful, and best kept in small groups or pairs.

Key Care Requirements:

• Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (approx. 200 liters) for a pair or small group.
• Substrate: Fine sand is mandatory; gravel can damage their gills and mouth during foraging.
• Temperature: Optimal range is 70–77°F; they prefer cooler, subtropical water but can handle up to 79°F. A 3–4 month cooler period (60–64°F) is recommended to mimic their natural habitat and boost health.
• Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH.
• Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including sinking carnivore/herbivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, and daphnia.
• Temperament/Tank Mates: Generally peaceful, but males become territorial during breeding. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful, similarly-sized South American fish.
• Maintenance: 10–15% weekly water changes are necessary to maintain water quality.

Breeding:

• These fish are delayed maternal mouthbrooders.
• Courtship involves "dry runs" over a cleaned spot, followed by egg deposition, fertilization, and the female brooding the eggs for roughly 14 days.

Habitat Setup:

• Use sand, driftwood, and rocks to create hiding spots.
• Ensure plants are sturdy and either potted or tied to decorations, as they may be uprooted.
