Green Neon Tetra

Paracheirodon simulans

Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is a highly sought-after freshwater nano fish native to the blackwater basins of South America. Distinct from standard neon tetras, they are slightly smaller, feature a longer, glowing greenish-blue lateral stripe, and lack prominent red coloration.

• Size: Maxes out at about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length.
• Lifespan: 2 to 3 years in a well-maintained aquarium.
• Appearance: A continuous, highly iridescent teal-green stripe running from nose to tail, with only a faint wash of red near the belly/tail.
• Temperament: Extremely peaceful, schooling fish that are excellent for community tanks.

Ideal Aquarium Care

To help them thrive and display their best colors, you should replicate their natural blackwater habitat.

Tank Size

• At least 10–20 gallons.
• As schooling fish, keep them in groups of 6 to 8 or more to help them feel secure.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 73°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C)
• pH Level: 5.5 to 6.5 (They require soft, slightly acidic water)

Decor & Setup

• Best in densely planted tanks with driftwood and floating plants.
• Use a darker substrate and background to make their iridescent stripes pop and reduce stress.

Diet

• Omnivorous: They readily accept high-quality nano flakes, micro pellets, and frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
