Green Fire Tetra

The Aphyocharax rathbuni, commonly known as the green fire tetra or Rathbun's bloodfin, is a small, active freshwater fish featuring an iridescent metallic-green body and a vivid red-orange lower belly and tail. Native to South American river basins, it is a hardy, peaceful shoaling species ideal for planted aquariums.

Natural Habitat and Care

• Origin: Paraguay, Paraná, and Uruguay river systems in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay.
• Size: Grows to an adult length of 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm).
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–80°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: Up to 20 dGH
• Tank Requirements:
  • Minimum 15 to 20-gallon tank
  • Best maintained with a dense arrangement of plants and open swimming spaces in the upper-middle water layers

Behavior and Tank Mates

• Social Structure: Must be kept in a group or school of at least 6 to 8 individuals to minimize shyness and display natural behavior.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful, though males can be active sparers and may occasionally nip at long, flowing fins (such as those on bettas or fancy guppies).

Diet

Omnivorous and unfussy; accepts high-quality flakes, small pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp.
