The Goldie or Sunshine Pleco (scientifically known as Scobinancistrus aureatus) is a vibrant, highly sought-after freshwater catfish. It is characterized by a dark black or deep brown body covered in bright golden-yellow spots and striking yellow-orange fin edges. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Origin and Size
Native Habitat: Clear, warm, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated waters of the Rio Xingu and Rio Iriri in Brazil.
Adult Size: Reaches an impressive 10 to 12 inches (30 to 35 cm) in length.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 120 gallons (approx. 300 to 450 litres) to accommodate their adult size and active scavenging.
Water Parameters: Temperature between 74–84°F (24–29°C) and a pH level of 6.0 to 7.5.
Environment: Requires strong water movement, high oxygen levels, and plenty of hiding spots created using smooth driftwood and rocks. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Diet and Temperament
Diet: Omnivorous with a heavy leaning toward protein. They need sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, and shrimp, supplemented occasionally by algae wafers or blanched vegetables. They are not primarily algae eaters. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Temperament: Generally peaceful toward other fish species, but can display territorial behavior toward other large bottom-dwelling plecos
