Gold Veil Balloon Ram
Product Details

The Gold Veil Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a striking freshwater dwarf cichlid. Beloved for its brilliant metallic-gold coloration and short, round "balloon" body shape, it makes an excellent, peaceful centerpiece for planted, established freshwater aquariums. However, its selective breeding requires meticulous, stable water care.

Optimal Water Parameters

Due to their specific genetics, balloon rams are highly sensitive to water quality and fluctuations. Poor or unstable water conditions can lead to significant health issues.

  • Temperature: 26 - 30°C (79 - 86°F); warmth is critical to their health.
  • pH Level: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (4 - 8 dGH).
  • Tank Conditions: Require an established, well-filtered tank with minimal current.

Diet & Feeding

These fish are benthophagous omnivores that will eagerly eat most commercially processed foods.

  • Dry Foods: High-quality micro-pellets and flakes.
  • Frozen/Live Foods: Brine shrimp, bloodworms, and mysis shrimp.
  • Note: Feed small amounts a couple of times per day, ensuring they consume it within 5 minutes.

Tank Mates & Temperament

The Gold Veil Balloon Ram is highly peaceful and makes an excellent addition to a calm community tank.

  • Compatible with: Small, calm community fish like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras.
  • Avoid: Large, aggressive, or highly active fish that could outcompete or stress them.
  • Behavior: Can be kept singly, in pairs, or in small groups. They may display mild territorial behavior only when breeding.

Habitat Setup

These fish thrive in a thoughtfully designed aquarium that mimics their natural habitat.

  • Preferred Tank Levels: Bottom-to-mid levels of the tank.
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel, as they naturally sift through the bottom for food.
  • Decor: Plenty of plants, caves, and driftwood to provide shelter and mimic their natural environment.
