Gold Leopard (Sterbai) Cory

The Sterbai Corydoras (Corydoras sterbai) is a peaceful, schooling bottom-dweller native to the Guaporé River in Brazil and Bolivia. Recognized for its dark, spotted body and distinct bright orange pectoral fins, this species grows to a size of 2.5–2.7 inches and thrives in community tanks with temperatures ranging from 75–82°F (24–28°C).

Key Care Requirements

• Tank Size:
  Minimum of 20 to 25 gallons, as they should be kept in schools of at least 4–6 individuals. Larger groups of 10+ are even better to encourage natural and active behavior.

• Substrate:
  Fine, smooth sand is highly recommended to prevent damage to their delicate, foraging barbels.

• Water Parameters:

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5
  • Water Hardness: 2–25 dH
  • Temperature: 75–82°F
    Their tolerance for warmer water makes them excellent tank mates for Discus.

• Diet:
  Omnivorous bottom-feeders that require a varied diet, including:

  • High-quality sinking pellets
  • Algae wafers
  • Live or frozen protein sources like bloodworms and brine shrimp

• Tank Mates:
  Best housed with other small to medium-sized, non-aggressive fish such as:

  • Tetras
  • Dwarf cichlids
  • Rasboras
  • Other peaceful community species
    Avoid keeping them with fin-nippers or aggressive cichlids.

Behavior & Notes

Sterba's Corydoras are active foragers that spend their time sifting through the substrate in synchronized, playful groups. While they are relatively hardy, caution is advised during transport, as they can secrete a toxic chemical when severely stressed or overcrowded. With proper care, they can live for 5 to 10+ years.
