Featherfin Synodontis (Wild Caught)
Product Details

The Featherfin Synodontis (Synodontis eupterus), also widely known as the Featherfin Squeaker, is a popular and hardy African catfish prized for its dramatic, feathery dorsal fin and robust personality.

Key Requirements for Care:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 200–250 litres for a single adult.
  • Water Temperature: 22°C to 27°C.
  • Water pH: 6.0 to 7.8 (highly adaptable).
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to prevent barbel damage.
  • Decor: Abundant caves, driftwood, and PVC pipes for daytime hiding.

Key Characteristics:

  • The "Squeak": They possess the unique ability to produce a distinct clicking or squeaking sound by rubbing their pectoral fin spines against their pectoral girdle, usually when stressed or defending territory.
  • Upside-Down Resting: Do not panic if you see them swimming or resting completely upside down under ledges or large leaves—this inverted behavior is completely normal for the genus.
  • Growth and Lifespan: They grow relatively large, typically reaching 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 inches) in home aquariums, and can easily live for 10 to 15+ years with proper care.
  • Pattern Shifting: As juveniles, they feature a highly intricate, zebra-like "network" pattern. As they mature, this breaks up into a uniform leopard-like spot pattern across a grey-brown body.
  • Diet: They are opportunistic omnivores. They readily consume sinking catfish pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, and will occasionally nibble on soft-leaved live plants.

Compatibility and Behaviour:

Featherfin Synodontis are classified as semi-aggressive. While they generally ignore mid-water and top-dwelling fish, they are highly territorial over bottom real estate and caves.
