Dwarf Chain Loach

Ambastaia sidthimunki, commonly known as the dwarf chain loach or pygmy chain loach, is a tiny, active freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. It features a silver-yellow body with a distinct dark, chain-like pattern.

Physical Traits and Origin

• Size: Grows to about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm) long.
• Appearance: Silver to pale gold body marked with a horizontal black chain pattern.
• Origin: Native to the Mae Klong, Chao Phraya, and Mekong river basins in Thailand and parts of Laos and Cambodia.
• Conservation: Listed as critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and damming; pet trade specimens are commercially bred.

Tank Care and Behavior

• Social Life: Highly active, peaceful, and social during the day. Must be kept in a group of 6 or more.
• Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons (approx. 75 liters).
• Water Needs: Temperature of 24–28°C (75–82°F), pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to medium hardness.
• Diet: Omnivorous/carnivorous; accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and helps control pest snails.
