Discus - Turquoise 9cm
Product Details

Discus fish (Symphysodon), often referred to as the "Kings of the Aquarium," are highly sought-after freshwater cichlids native to the Amazon River basin. Their majestic, disc-shaped bodies and vibrant colors make them a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. However, their care requires meticulous attention, making them best suited for experienced hobbyists.

Key Water Parameters

Discus fish are highly sensitive to water quality and fluctuations. They thrive in stable, warm environments with specific water conditions:

  • Temperature: 28°C to 31°C (84°F to 88°F)
  • pH Level: Slightly acidic, between 6.0 and 7.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft, between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm)

️ Diet & Feeding

Discus are omnivores and require a varied, protein-rich diet to maintain their brilliant coloration and growth.

  • Foundation: High-quality cichlid flakes and micro-pellets
  • Supplement: Frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and beef heart
  • Routine: Frequent, small feedings 2 to 3 times daily. Always remove uneaten food within 5 minutes to prevent ammonia spikes.

Tank Mates & Behavior

Discus are schooling, social, and intelligent fish that thrive in groups. Their behavior and compatibility with other species are key considerations for a harmonious tank environment.

  • Schooling: Keep in groups of at least 6 to 8 to reduce shyness and establish healthy social hierarchies.
  • Tank Mates: Best paired with peaceful, heat-tolerant species like Cardinal Tetras, Corydoras, and Ram Cichlids.
  • Temperament: They often recognize their owners and swim to the front of the glass at feeding times.
