Diamond Tetra
Product Details
Moenkhausia pittieri, commonly known as the diamond tetra, is a peaceful freshwater fish native to Venezuela, prized for its sparkling, jewel-like scales. Adults grow to about 5 to 6 cm (2 inches) and thrive in schools of 6 or more in planted aquariums.
Appearance and Traits
Size:
Reaches 5–6 cm (approx. 2 inches) in length.
Colors:
Silvery body with iridescent scales that flash pink, blue, and gold under light.
Sexual Dimorphism:
Males are larger and develop long, flowing violet-sheened dorsal and anal fins; females have shorter, translucent fins.
Tank Requirements
Group Size:
Must be kept in a shoal of at least 6 individuals to reduce stress and display natural behavior.
Tank Size:
Minimum 75 litres (20 gallons).
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
- pH: 6.0–7.5 (prefers soft, slightly acidic water)
Environment:
Thrives with dark substrate, live plants, and driftwood or botanicals that release tannins to darken the water slightly.
Diet
Omnivorous:
Eats standard tropical fish flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
