Product Details

Catappa leaves (from the Indian almond tree) are a staple for freshwater aquariums. They release beneficial tannins and humic acids into the water, which naturally soften the water, gently lower the pH, provide antibacterial properties, and create a natural food source for shrimp and fry.

Key Benefits

  • Health & Immunity:
Tannins have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties that help protect fish from minor infections and fin rot.

  • Water Parameters:
They slowly release organic compounds that lower pH and soften water, mimicking natural tropical habitats.

  • Stress Reduction:
The tannins stain the water a gentle golden-brown tint. This "blackwater" effect reduces stress and makes timid fish (like Bettas, tetras, and Apistogramma) feel more secure.

  • Food & Shelter:
As the leaves decompose, they develop a nutritious biofilm. They also create excellent hiding spots and resting surfaces.

How to Prepare & Use

  • Sanitize:
Briefly boil the leaves in water for 5–10 minutes. This sanitizes them, removes excess dust, and helps them waterlog so they sink to the bottom of your tank faster.

  • Dosage:
Use about 1 to 2 medium leaves per 20 litres (5 US gallons) of water.

  • Placement:
Drop the steeped leaf directly into the aquarium. It may float for a few days before sinking.

  • Replacement:
You can leave the leaf in the tank until it fully decomposes (which can take weeks or months) or swap it out for a fresh leaf every month.

  • Alternative:
If you want the water benefits without the leaf litter in your tank, you can brew concentrated "catappa tea" and add small amounts directly to your water.
