Clown Loach

The clown loach (Botia macracantha, currently classified as Chromobotia macracanthus) is a popular tropical freshwater fish known for its vibrant orange-red body, striking black vertical bands, and playful social behavior. Native to Indonesia on Sumatra and Borneo, it belongs to the botiid family.

Key Physical Traits

• Size:
  Grows up to 30 cm (12 inches) in the wild, though it grows very slowly in home aquariums.

• Appearance:
  Bright orange body with three distinct triangular black bands and a pointed snout with sensory barbels.

• Defense:
  Features a sharp, hidden spine beneath each eye that can erect when the fish feels threatened.

Tank Requirements and Care

• Group Size:
  Must be kept in social groups of 5 or more; solitary fish become stressed and hide.

• Tank Size:
  Requires a large aquarium of at least 300 litres (80+ gallons) due to adult size and active schooling nature.

• Water Parameters:
  Prefers temperatures between 25–30 °C (77–86 °F), a pH of 5.0–8.0, and soft to medium hardness.

• Environment:
  Needs fine sand or smooth gravel substrate with plenty of driftwood, caves, and hiding spots.

Diet and Behavior

• Feeding:
  Omnivorous bottom-feeder that accepts sinking pellets, live worms, and crustaceans. It is also an excellent natural predator for pest snail control in aquariums.

• Temperament:
  Peaceful community fish that can occasionally display quirky, active, or resting sideways behavior.
