Checkered Barbs (Oliotius oligolepis)

Checkered Barbs, formerly known as Puntius oligolepis, are peaceful, hardy schooling fish native to Indonesia. They are recognized for their silver bodies adorned with a distinct black, grid-like checkered pattern. Fully grown males display vibrant, red-orange fins with black edges, adding a splash of color to any aquarium. These highly active nano-fish reach a maximum length of approximately 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).

Ideal Tank Setup

Tank Size:
At least 75–100 Liters to provide ample open swimming space for a school of Checkered Barbs.

Water Parameters:

• Temperature: Between 20°C–25°C
• pH: 6.0–7.5
• Water Hardness: 1–12 dGH

Decor:
Checkered Barbs thrive in well-planted community aquariums with plenty of open swimming areas. A dark substrate is recommended to highlight their striking colors.

Behavior & Compatibility

Schooling:
Checkered Barbs are incredibly social and should be kept in groups of 6 or more.

Temperament:
They are highly peaceful, making them a great choice for community tanks. Unlike aggressive barb species, such as Tiger Barbs, Checkered Barbs are gentle and harmonious.

Tank Mates:
These fish are excellent additions to community tanks alongside other peaceful fish of similar size, such as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras catfish.

Diet

Omnivorous:
Checkered Barbs accept a variety of high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
