Hyphessobrycon bentosi, commonly referred to as the ornate tetra or candy cane tetra, is a peaceful freshwater schooling fish native to the Amazon Basin. Its striking appearance includes:

• Coloration: Features a soft pink to purplish-red body with a dark humeral spot behind the gills.
• Fins: Displays a distinctive black dorsal fin with a prominent white tip. Males develop longer, more extravagant extensions on their dorsal and anal fins.

This species thrives in its native environment and requires specific conditions to flourish in an aquarium:

• Origin: Found in sluggish tributaries and flood-plain lakes in the Amazon Basin of Brazil and Peru.
• Tank Size: A minimum of 40 to 60 liters (10–15 gallons) is recommended for a small school.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: 24°C–28°C (75°F–82°F)
  • pH: 5.5 to 7.5
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water

Behavior

• Social Nature: These fish are highly social and peaceful, making them ideal for community tanks.
• Schooling: Best kept in schools of 6 to 8+ individuals to reduce shyness and ensure their well-being.
