Bronze Cory

The Corydoras aeneus (Bronze Cory) is a hardy, peaceful freshwater catfish native to South America. Growing to 2.5–3 inches, these active, bottom-dwelling scavengers are perfect for community tanks. They are schooling fish that must be kept in groups of at least six and require a soft substrate to protect their sensitive barbels.

Aquarium Setup

• Substrate: Must be sand or fine, smooth gravel. Rough substrates can damage the barbels (whiskers) they use to forage, leading to infections.
• Decor & Plants: Provide plenty of open space for swimming and bottom-sifting, along with hiding spots like driftwood and broad-leafed plants to help them feel secure.
• Tank Mates: Peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and livebearers.

Diet

As omnivores, they readily accept sinking foods. A balanced diet should include:

• Sinking bottom-feeder tablets or granules
• High-quality flake foods
• Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

Behavior & Special Notes

• Schooling: They are highly social and should always be kept in groups of at least 6 to prevent stress.
• Air Breathing: Like other Corydoras, they are facultative air-breathers. They will periodically dart to the surface to gulp air and then dive back down, which is perfectly normal behavior.
