Borneo Suckers
Product Details

The Borneo Sucker (Gastromyzon spp.), commonly known as the Hillstream Loach, is a unique freshwater fish native to fast-flowing, highly oxygenated streams in Southeast Asia. It thrives in river-style aquariums where it uses specialized fins to cling to surfaces while grazing on algae and biofilm.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance:
Features a flat, ray-like body and large, fused pectoral and pelvic fins that form a natural suction disc. Their patterns vary, but most showcase marbled or spotted appearances.

  • Size & Lifespan:
Typically grows to 1.5 to 2.5 inches (3.5 to 6.5 cm) and has an average lifespan of 2 to 4 years in captivity.

  • Temperament:
Highly peaceful and generally shy, making them excellent, non-aggressive bottom-dwellers for community tanks.

Ideal Aquarium Conditions

  • Water Quality:
Because they originate from torrential waters, they are highly sensitive to poor water quality and low oxygen levels.

  • Temperature:
    65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C).

  • Water Flow:
Strong, high-turnover currents are essential to keep them healthy.

  • Setup:
A well-established, biologically mature aquarium with plenty of smooth rocks, driftwood, and bright lighting to encourage natural algae growth is highly recommended.

Diet

Borneo Suckers are primarily grazers that rely on natural biofilm and algae. In the aquarium, their diet should be supplemented with:

  • Sinking algae wafers
  • Spirulina flakes
  • Occasional high-protein options like frozen daphnia or bloodworms

By providing the right environment and care, these fascinating fish can thrive and bring a unique aesthetic to your aquarium!
