Bolivian (Butterfly) Ram

Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, commonly known as the Bolivian Ram or Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid, is a popular South American dwarf cichlid native to the Amazon River basins in Brazil and Bolivia. Highly prized in the aquarium hobby, they are known for their striking combination of gold, silver, and red tones, spiny dorsal fins, and peaceful demeanor.

• Diet: Omnivorous sandsifting forager; readily accepts high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms 

Ideal Aquarium Care

Compared to their close relative, the German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), Bolivian Rams are widely considered hardier and much more tolerant of varying water conditions.

• Minimum Tank Size: 100+ liters (approx. 20–30 gallons) for a pair
• Water Temperature: 24–28°C (76–82°F)
• Water Chemistry: Moderately soft to slightly hard water, with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5
• Tank Setup: Flourishes in heavily planted tanks with sandy substrates, smooth driftwood, and hiding spots 

Behavior & Tank Mates

Bolivian Rams spend most of their time patrolling the middle to lower levels of the aquarium, occasionally sifting the sand for food. They are generally peaceful but can exhibit mild territoriality during the breeding season.

Suitable tank mates include:

• Peaceful schooling fish like tetras
• Corydoras
• Other non-aggressive community fish
