The Lake Kutubu rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris), also known as the turquoise rainbowfish, is an endangered freshwater fish native to Papua New Guinea. It features a bright blue-green upper body and is a popular, peaceful schooling fish in the aquarium hobby.
Natural Habitat and Status
Origin:
Endemic only to Lake Kutubu and its outlet (the Soro River) in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Conservation:
Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to local environmental pressures and human activity. Most fish in the trade are captive-bred.
Size:
Grows up to 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) long.
Aquarium Care Requirements
Tank Size:
Minimum 120 cm (4 feet) long, holding at least 110 liters (30 gallons) to provide active swimming space.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 20–27°C (68–81°F)
- pH: 7.0–8.4
Behavior:
Peaceful, social, and best kept in a group of 6 or more.
Diet:
Omnivorous; accepts standard flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
