Blue Mystery Snail

The blue mystery snail (Pomacea diffusa) is a popular, peaceful freshwater aquarium snail admired for its striking sky-blue or cobalt-blue shell and active algae-grazing habits.

Appearance and Behavior

Shell and Body:

• Features a translucent white shell over a dark body, creating the optical illusion of a soft blue color.
• Grows up to 5 cm (2 inches) wide.

Activity:

• Highly active scavengers that constantly explore tank glass, plants, and substrate.

Anatomy:

• Equipped with a breathing siphon (a "snorkel") used to reach the surface and inhale air.
• Includes an operculum (trapdoor) used to seal themselves inside for protection.

Tank Requirements and Care

Parameters:

• Best kept in temperatures of 22–28°C (72–82°F) and a pH of 7.0–8.2.

Tank Size:

• Requires a minimum of 20 litres (5 gallons) per snail.

Safety:

• Needs a tight tank lid because they like to climb out of the water.
• Avoid copper-based medications, as copper is toxic to them.

Diet:

• Consumes leftover fish food, biofilm, and algae.
• Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach, along with calcium sources like cuttlebone to maintain strong shells.
