Inpaichthys kerri, commonly known as the blue or purple emperor tetra (or royal tetra), is a small, peaceful South American freshwater fish. It grows to about 1.5 inches (3–4 cm), features a prominent black horizontal stripe, and thrives in a school of 6 or more in a 15+ gallon tank.


Natural Habitat and Care

Origin: Endemic to the Rio Aripuanã and upper Rio Madeira basins in Brazil.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–82°F (24–28°C)
  • pH: 5.5–7.0 (soft, acidic water preferred)

Diet:

  • Omnivorous; accepts:
    • Flakes
    • Micro-pellets
    • Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms

Tank Setup:

  • Appreciates:
    • Dark substrate
    • Driftwood
    • Dense vegetation mimicking a blackwater environment

Distinguishing Features

Size:
Stays smaller than the standard Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri).

Adipose Fin:

  • Males: Possess a blue adipose fin behind the dorsal fin.
  • Females: Display a distinct red-orange or pinkish-red adipose fin.
