Betta - Samurai Female

The Samurai Betta is a rare and striking variety of the popular plakat (short-finned) betta, originating from Thailand. Famous for its metallic, armor-like scales that contrast with a deep black body, it is highly sought after by aquarists.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance:
  Samurai Bettas typically display a solid dark base covered by thick, metallic silver, white, or gold scales across their head and back, resembling a warrior's suit.

• Origin:
  This unique variety was developed as a mutation through repeated breeding of the Black Dragon betta.

• Behavior:
  Like other bettas, Samurai Bettas are highly territorial and generally cannot be housed with other male bettas. They are known for their lively, interactive, and sometimes aggressive personalities.

Care Requirements

Samurai Bettas thrive in conditions similar to other freshwater bettas but require a little extra preventative care:

• Tank Size:
  A minimum of 5 gallons (19 liters) is recommended, with water kept heated between 78°F to 80°F (25°C to 27°C).

• Aquascaping:
  These bettas do wonderfully in heavily planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots and resting leaves.

• Special Health Considerations:
  Due to their heavy breeding, Samurai Bettas are prone to a condition called "Diamond Eye", where excess metallic scales grow over their eyes, potentially leading to blindness. They are also somewhat more susceptible to tumors and swim bladder issues.
