Female Betta Fish (Betta splendens)

Female betta fish are smaller, shorter-finned, and generally less aggressive than males, though they still require proper care. They feature a visible "egg spot" (ovipositor) near their ventral fins, a rounder body shape, and can sometimes be kept together in multi-female groups known as sororities.

Physical Identification

  • Fins: Shorter and less flowing than male bettas, though some variants like female crowntails have distinct edges.
  • Egg Spot: A small, white, salt-grain-like dot (ovipositor) located between the ventral and anal fins.
  • Body Shape: Slightly shorter and rounder/wider in the abdomen area compared to the slender male body.
  • Colors: Often less vivid, but modern fancy female variants can still display striking blues, reds, and metallic tones.
  • Stress Stripes: May display temporary vertical stress or mating bars along the body.

Care and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 20 litres (5 gallons) for a single female; 75 litres (20 gallons) or larger if attempting a multi-female sorority.
  • Water Parameters: Temperature between 24–28°C (75–82°F) and pH levels from 6.5 to 7.5.
  • Environment: Heavily planted aquariums with plenty of driftwood and hiding spots to break line-of-sight and reduce territorial stress.
  • Diet: Carnivorous diet consisting of specialized betta pellets, frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Behavior and Sororities

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive. While calmer than males, individual personalities vary widely.
  • Sorority Housing: Keeping a group (usually 4 to 6 or more) together requires a large, densely planted tank and a backup plan in case individual fish prove incompatible or overly aggressive.
