Balloon Mollies are a selectively bred, man-made variant of the common molly (Poecilia sphenops or Poecilia latipinna). They are renowned for their signature arched back and short, rounded, pot-bellied shape. While their cute appearance and active behavior make them popular, it’s important to note that their unique shape results from a genetic spine deformity similar to scoliosis. Because of their modified bodies, Balloon Mollies require specialized care to thrive.

• Typical Lifespan: 1 to 3 years.
• Their curved spine compresses internal organs, potentially making them less efficient swimmers and more prone to health issues compared to regular mollies.

Tank Size

• Minimum Recommended Tank Size: 115 liters (30 gallons).
  This ensures ample swimming space and helps maintain stable water parameters.

Water Parameters

• Thrive in hard, alkaline water with a pH between 7.0 and 8.5.
• Optimal water temperatures range from 23°C to 28°C (74°F - 82°F).
• They can tolerate—and sometimes benefit from—mildly brackish water.

Diet

Balloon Mollies are omnivores and require a varied diet:

• Feed them high-quality flakes or pellets.
• Include regular vegetable matter, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables.
• They also enjoy grazing on algae.

Breeding & Fry Care

Balloon Mollies are prolific livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming live young instead of laying eggs.

• Gestation: Females are pregnant for approximately 4 to 6 weeks, and each drop can produce 10 to 60 fry.
• Survival: Adult mollies will readily eat their own babies. To increase fry survival, provide:
  • Densely planted areas.
  • Floating cover.
  • A separate breeding trap or grow-out tank.
