Asian Rummynose Rasbora

The Sawbwa barb (Sawbwa resplendens), commonly known as the Asian rummynose, is a tiny, endangered freshwater fish endemic to Inle Lake in Myanmar. This unique species is famed for its scaleless body, as well as the bright red snout and iridescent blue-silver sheen of the males.

Physical Traits & Identification

• Size: Reaches a maximum length of about 3.5 to 4 cm (1.4 to 1.6 inches).
• No Scales: This species is nearly or completely scaleless, making it sensitive to certain fish medications like copper.
• Sexual Dimorphism:
  • Males feature a metallic blue-silver body with a bright red-orange nose and matching red tips on the tail fin.
  • Females are duller, lack red coloring, and display a dark spot near the anal vent.

Habitat & Tank Care

• Water Chemistry: Prefers hard, alkaline water, mimicking its native lake environment, ideally with a pH of 7.0 to 8.0.
• Aquarium Setup: Thrives best in densely planted nano tanks with a dark substrate and floating plants to help them feel secure.
• Behavior: A peaceful mid-water schooling fish that should be kept in groups of 6 or more. Males may occasionally display mild sparring behavior if kept in too small of a group or ratio.
