The Asian Crossback Gold Arowana (Scleropages formosus) is an elite freshwater fish native to Bukit Merah Lake in Malaysia. Known for its stunning metallic scales that cross the back at maturity, it is highly prized in Asian cultures as a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and luck.
Key Facts & Care
Appearance:
Juveniles have gold-rimmed scales on their lower rows, which progressively spread to the 6th and final row (the back) as they mature, giving them a solid gold appearance.
Tank Size:
These are large, active fish that can grow up to 60 cm in length. They require massive aquariums (minimum 700+ liters, often ponds) to accommodate their size and prevent spinal deformity.
Water Parameters:
Maintain a temperature between 26°C and 30°C with a stable pH of 6.5 to 7.5.
Safety:
Arowanas are notorious jumpers. Tight-fitting, weighted, or reinforced heavy glass covers are essential.
Diet:
Strictly carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of high-quality pellets, frozen shrimp, crickets, and feeder fish.
