Apistogramma macmasteri(Red neck viejita) - Pair
Product Details

Apistogramma macmasteri (commonly known as the Red Neck Viejita) is a vibrant South American dwarf cichlid. It features striking red, gold, and blue highlights, grows up to 6–7 cm, and thrives in soft, slightly acidic water.

Taxonomy and Mislabeling Correction

  • The Viejita Mix-up: The trade name "Red Neck Viejita" is almost always a color variant or selective breed of Apistogramma macmasteri rather than the true Apistogramma viejita, which is very rare in the aquarium hobby.

  • Origin: Native to the Meta River system and Orinoco basin in Colombia.

Care and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size:
A minimum of 80 litres (approx. 20 gallons) is required for a pair or small harem.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 24–29°C (75–84°F)
    • pH Range: 5.5–7.0
  • Environment:
Provide a soft sandy substrate with plenty of driftwood, leaf litter, and caves to serve as visual barriers and hiding spaces.

Behavior and Tank Mates

  • Temperament:
Generally peaceful with other species, but can become territorial during breeding. Males may exhibit aggression towards single females; keeping a harem (one male with multiple females) can help distribute this behavior.

  • Tank Mates:
Best suited with small, peaceful schooling fish such as tetras or pencilfish that inhabit the upper and middle water columns.
