Product details

The Apistogramma cacatuoides (Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid) is a vibrant, South American dwarf cichlid highly favored in the aquarium hobby. Renowned for the male's exaggerated, jagged dorsal fin that resembles a cockatoo's crest, it is relatively hardy, sexually dimorphic, and popular for selective color morphs like "Triple Red."

Profile at a Glance

  • Origin: Amazon River Basin (Peru, Colombia, Brazil)
  • Max Size:
    • Males: 7.5–9 cm
    • Females: 5–6 cm
  • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, but males are highly territorial

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C
  • pH Level: 6.0 to 7.0 (wild types prefer softer, more acidic water, while captive-bred are adaptable)
  • Water Hardness: Soft to medium (2–15 dGH)

Tank Setup & Behavior

  • Aquarium Size: Minimum 75 litres for a single pair
  • Decor: Thrives in heavily planted tanks with a soft, sandy substrate for sifting. Needs an abundance of hiding spots, caves, and leaf litter.
  • Tank Mates: Good in community tanks with small, peaceful upper-level species like tetras or pencilfish.

Breeding & Dimorphism

  • Sexual Dimorphism:
    • Males boast striking coloration (often bright orange/red fins) and elongated dorsal fin rays.
    • Females are mostly yellow and much smaller.
  • Breeding Style: Cave spawners. The female fiercely guards the eggs and fry alone, while the male patrols the broader territory.
  • Special Traits: Submissive "sneaker" males exist. They mimic female coloration and finnage to avoid territorial aggression from dominant males and opportunistically mate.
